DAY 2: THE DRIVE HOME

“Lose yourself in the service of animals who really need your help.

You might be surprised ... what they can teach you about yourself.”

On the drive home through the beautiful Utah and Arizona landscapes, we had a lot of time to think. There were so many good things about what we had done that weekend. All the people we met from Best Friends were wonderful. All the dogs and cats we met were great too. We had a purpose, we were helping animals that needed the help. Even something as small as walking dogs or washing dog bowls meant that we were serving the needs of animals that needed it, and that felt good.

A lot of it had to do with the location too, as Best Friends sits in an absolutely beautiful place in the Utah hills. If you've ever seen a place that made you relax just by looking at it, then you know what it was like for me. Every part of that weekend was everything I had hoped for and more. We already knew we had to go back and do it again, and we're going to as soon as we can.

We weren't just helping the animals; we were helping ourselves. Working with animals in a setting like that is therapy for me, it relaxes me, it gives me clearer focus. All I can do is recommend the experience to anybody and everybody. Lose yourself in the service of animals who really need your help. You might be surprised what you can learn about them, and what they can teach you about yourself.
